What’s It All About?

Dundee is bidding to be the UK City of Culture in 2017, a competition run by the UK government which uses culture and creativity to transform communities. It’s an opportunity to remind ourselves what an astonishing place Dundee is, and what remarkable people live and work here.

We Dundee is a way to show the tremendous imagination and enthusiasm of people from all walks of life across the city, and demonstrate the difference that becoming UK City of Culture could make to us individually and as a city.

We were delighted that Dundee reached the shortlist in June 2013 – one of only four from the initial eleven cities which is through to the final, with Hull, Swansea Bay and Leicester – you can follow Dundee’s journey through all the press coverage and your social media stories, here.

The contributions on We Dundee are a key part of Dundee’s bid. The deadline was 30th September 2013 and the winning city will be announced on 20th November 2013.

Using the We Dundee contributions, Dundee’s Makar, W.N. Herbert wrote and performed the poem ‘Dundee Dreaming’ at the bid send off in City Square. To download a copy of the poem, please click here.

If you would like to show your support for Dundee as the team prepares to give the final presentation in Derry~Londonderry on 14th November, please do print out your own We Dundee flag! We’d love to see which fun, exotic, creative places you can fly your flag, so please email either add your photos to Facebook: www.facebook.com/WeDundee, or to Twitter: @wedundee, or email to us: contact@wedundee.com. You can see all the flags below…

Dundee’s Bid was discussed in a cross-party debate in The Scottish Parliament on 12th November 2013 – it was a unanimous vote that Dundee would make an excellent UK City of Culture in 2017. You can read all speeches from the debate, here.

Tell Us Your Thoughts

The aim of this site is to show the competition judges that there’s more to Dundee than they (or we) might think – that it’s a city full of surprises. When the site launched on 28th March 2013 the original goal was to give the judges 2,017 reasons to think of us as the best place for the City of Culture 2017.  Due to the incredible enthusiasm and support for the project, we want to keep We Dundee growing!

Tell us what you would love to see in Dundee 2017 during a year of UK City of Culture and it might just happen! Four themes emerged from the first stage of We Dundee, these are: people, the environment, the river and the light. Your thought can fit under one of these themes or you can tell us about something else. You can submit as many thoughts as you like and ideas submitted after the September deadline will still inform the work of the Bid Team, but it won’t be possible to include them in the bid itself.

Anyone who doesn’t have access to the internet can visit their local library, they provide free supported access to the internet; you can also use the libraries internal mail system to send ideas to the bid team who are based in the offices within Central Library.

Who Are We?

The Dundee Partnership is coordinating the bid with input from as many organisations and individuals as want to get involved – this is an evolving project.
