PEOPLE AND GROWING

Support Dundee

the friendliness and humour in good times and bad, and managing to be cutting edge modern (esp in arts) while retaining all that’s best about traditional Scottish urban life

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Being Dundonian born and bred, the thing that surprises me most about my home town is that so many people (who don't live in or visit the town) don't have a true sense of what makes it the diverse and exciting city that it is. They are unaware of the history that helped shape it and it's people. They are unaware of the rich cultural seam that runs through the city (and always has). They don't appreciate it as a city of significant medical research which has an impact across the world. It is a place of innovation, compassion, confidence and creativity.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Tea ann cake
Jessie's Kitchen
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Scotland's the home of invention and Dundee's its Scottish home
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Even the small communities such as Lochee are getting extensive work done on them to improve the place overall.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) 24*7 open Clarks bakery always attracts me with variuos flavors, tastes of pasteries and pies. I am loving it so much that I started living nearby it & let open my window for the sweet fragnance of cooking.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) We have such a vast amount of interesting places and things to do. My great grandchildren are here for Easter so we intend doing The Rock Garden/Broughty Ferry Castle/Sensation Centre/DCA/Verdant Works etc etc. and their excitement is hard to contain. Also as a family we think Dundee has one of the best music scenes going on as well.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I was there and right in the thick of things when it transformed from a post-apocalyptic dump into a vibrant digital city. I am proud to be associated in some way with this unique, transformational city.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee has an abundance of amateur musical theatre, music and drama groups offering a multitude of opportunities for young people and adults to perform.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) its an all round great place lots to do and lots to learn.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) How friendly the people are!

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) As a visitor to this beautiful city I was struck by the diversity of people and how well everone got on together. They made us feel so welcome and were so very helpful.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The ever changing waterfront
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I came to Dundee for a short period and now 14 years later it is my home. I love the size of the city and the village feel. Mrs William's newsagent in the Perth Road has been operating for over 30 years and who better to pop in and visit of a morning than herself. She has become a good friend and we will all sorely miss her when she retires in the near future. It's people like this along with its vibrant art scene and waterfront location that makes Dundee a truly unique place to live.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee has been a thriving cultural hub for decades if not centuries. With the refurbishment of the McManus Galleries the Dundee story has been well expressed and both reflected and built upon. The creation of the V&A and the building of a new railway station by 2017 will allow Dundee to be more easily shared with the rest of the UK and the city of culture status would further evidence that we as a city have an exciting future ahead.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) A great city - first class university in design, art and ground-breaking medical research. One of the few theatre repertory companies still active in UK. Braithwaites coffee and tea emporium which is one of Dundee's cultural centres. Superb location on the river Tay. Verdant Works and the McManus first rate exhibitions and museum. Well deserved location for the V & A
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is a city which really emphasizes its natural beauty. From the spectacular views from The Law to the Tay Bridge, there isn't a part of Dundee that doesn't have a beautiful aspect about it. Our cultural diversity is already present and growing at a rapid rate, led forward by two universities that attract students from all around the globe. A spectacular city.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Lived here for 10 years. Great Universities and Great Social Life. A city of culture from Verdant Works & Discovery Point to New V&A Museum.
You are spoiled for choice, something for all ages.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The forward thinking art and technology community.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The city is teeming with mucicians of all sorts, classical, folk, rock, you name it! Dundonians are passionate about sharing their music and there is always a very healthy scene going on.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I was Born in Dundee Royal Infirmary and Like so many things in Dundee it is gone and been replaced with something Better. I moved away when I was 18 (Now 45) I always had fond memories of MY home City but when I returned 20 odd years later it had transformed from the old City it was into a Vibrant Beautiful City it is today the best thing I liked was the Big ship Docked there in the edge of town. But it has retained the best parts of the Old City the architecture is still beautiful.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I'd like to tell you about Chae Strathie who spent his lunch breaks writing children's books. He now has several published. I have noticed in Dundee the large amount of people who in their spare time are doing incredibly creative things, such as my husband who works for the council but in his own time is a potter. My friend who works at two jobs and in her spare time makes wonderful table decorations from sweets. The friend making childen's puppets etc etc...Dundee is a crafty city
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The strong community spirit is a key feature of Dundee. I am constantly amazed at how the city has developed creatively building on the legacy of jute, jam, journalism, whaling, ship building etc. Learning from the past ... Looking to the future
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The big sky over Fairmuir Park on a summer's evening, walking back home from The Plough.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is full of nice places to visit, rest or enjoy for a walk if you want, but its best asset is the people. Dundee is full of people from different culture and being French I felt integrated very quickly because this is what this city is about: People with great heart. I am regularly dancing Indian dances at the Bharatiya Ashram and I am learning painting with a local artist John Stoa and I think that I could not combine so many arts activities elsewhere than In Dundee – Great city of Culture.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Botanic Gardens is a hidden treasure of Dundee. Lots to see, do and eat for all the family at any time of year! Dundee people are always positive, happy, friendly people and this is one of the best things about the city.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) My Dad's city. I have visited regularly over the years and am delighted at the wonderful changes taking place. I am a keen supporter of the arts and see Dundee's rebirth as a centre for the arts very exciting. Once the waterfront developments are complete Dundee will add another dimension to it's colourful history. I love to visit Dundee. I love to walk its streets and meet with its people. I fully support Dundee's bid to be Culture Capital 2017.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Love the beauty of Dundee, from the Law Hill until the River Tay. Love the poem engraved in stone as you walk by the river and how majestic the Discovery Ship is. I love to live in the city of discoveries and innovation!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The University's Saturday Evening Lecture Series - where town and gown meet, with no pretensions!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) the art scene is thriving, welcoming and diverse!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design continues to 'fleh heh' as one of Britain's Top 5 art schools, but paradoxically remains a hidden gem, both locally and nationally.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Discovering foody gems like 'The Cheesery' and 'T-Ann Cake' both on Exchange Street just a few hundred yards off the High Street.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) the biotech lab researchers really do their best to find cures for many of our worst diseases
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is no longer only a city of Discovery, it is a city which has re-invented itself. Like many places, the loss of industry was a severe blow. However, it has developed new industry, new strengths and new pride. Cancer research, arts, computer games; it's a reinvention based around research, creativity and ingenuity.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The growth of the University of Dundee & the student activities it offers is fantastic. I worked in the students association for 4 happy years & it inspired me to develop my career. I now live in New York!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is a city waiting to be discovered, situated between the dolphins in the river Tay and the magnificent mountain 'The Law' behind, it holds a rich history of Jam, Journalism and Jute and an exciting future of biomedical discoveries, computer game inventions and the 'city makeover' with a new V&A museum and a new train station.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) the friendliness and humour in good times and bad, and managing to be cutting edge modern (esp in arts) while retaining all that's best about traditional Scottish urban life
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I am surprised and reminded on a daily basis just how great this city really is.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Ninewells hospital in Dundee is amazing. It has done so much for myself and my relatives. A huge asset..
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I am not from Dundee and have travelled all my life living all over the UK and abroad. Dundee is rich because of its people and how they are loyal to their history, everyone in Dundee and anything past and present that is produced in Dundee.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The city oozes with history and many stories of discovery and determination
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The view from the law hill is one of Dundee's hidden gems and allows you to see the evolving story of the changes occurring in Dundee, and still view it's past, it's present and its future.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The view of Dundee at night from across the water - a magical fairyland. The wildlife, Dundee has red squirrels, foxes and deer, as just a small example - alive with nature. The history within the Howff - Dundee's past in one central area.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) All the cheeky birds.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is full of secrets - a walk around the town shows so many hidden things we miss when driving around. The Dundee women's trail, for example and the Time Gun at Dudhope Park. Our parks are glorious!

I also believe we are responsible for the culinary innovation of 'The Mince Roll'. We deserve credit for that.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Doesn't surprise me as such, as I've know it all my life, but it still holds me in awe...
The cityscape that presents itself in front of you as you drive across the Tay Road Bridge is truly beautiful and unrivalled sight.
When I was a student in Edinburgh in the late 1980s, returning to Dundee for weekends and holidays in my white Ford Capri, I would purposely take the drive through Fife, rather than the motorway route via Perth, just so I could take in that view. As I emerged from the bend of the dual carriageway as it passes through the cutting behind Newport, I would reach over and set the cassette tape playing at a point I'd pre-cued, and for the final 1.4 miles of my journey home, I would blast out The Tourists' So Good to Be Back Home Again.
And then to see things from the opposite perspective, making your way to the top of the Law (pleeeease! not the Law Hill, if you don't mind!) you can look back over that sight to Fife, the two bridges linking it to the city beneath you, as well as the full 360 view, taking in Broughty Ferry, the Sidlaws, Lochee, Cox's Stack and Balgay, and Invergowrie Bay...
Need I say more? I could, but I won't... Come and see for yourself.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The willingness of people to support fledglings artists, people are passionate enough to offer their help and support for free!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee was Scotland's second city for over 200 years and by area had Scotland's largest medieval city centre.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Many people forget that we have a lovely beach on our door step!

I pick up after my dog so people should pick up after themselves and their children.

Lets keep in lovely.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Love that Dundee is a huge village pretending to be a city. Forget about 6 degrees of separation, in Dundee its always 2 degrees. People are friendly, and make everyone welcome due to its matriarchal society, forget about women's movement, Dundee women have always been the centre of the workforce.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The Law - one of the finest view points in Scotland. Inspirational.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Although Dundee is not particularly nice at first sight, the sunset from Broughty Ferry or the sunrise looking at Hilltown from the University is simply amazing.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Finding a little piece of history right under your nose from the Howff, the walks about the Women of Dundee, and the plaques that are displayed throughout the City which tell you about its history. My kids love the Dare ProPlay event which takes place each year, .You cant beat the feeling of pride when you return from your travels and see the City of Dundee laid out before you - you know your home.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) That I always want to go back. Having had the intention of going to Dundee and getting out as soon as possible, but the combination of arts, design and regeneration leaves me seeking a return every time I leave.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is always trying to reinvent it'self, trying to be better than it's percieved. Dundee is different, we are brilliant and it's time for the rest of the world to see that too.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Although it is an established cultural asset, as a foreigner to Dundee I was surprised to find such an amazing cultural institution such as the DCA! But Dundee has many surprises in store, be it the whimisical statues on High Street or the art that surrounds you on campus buildings on a daily basis. Dundee is full of culture but never does it loose its rooting with its people and pretend it is something it isn't. That degree of down-to-earth-ness is surprising for a cultural city!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Its huge creativity
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee's spirit. The people are so friendly, the atmosphere incredibly warm and welcoming, and the City as a whole is just such a wonderfully positively-spirited place to work, play and live.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I'm 10 minutes from town. 10 minutes fyom the beach and 10 minutes from the hills. What more do I need from a city?
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I don't think this is classed as a "hidden secret" but it's something I hope will be highlighted as part of Dundee's cultural activity - the annual blues bonanza held at the end of June each year - purported to be the biggest free blues festival in Europe, and hugely popular with the artists and audiences alike.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The climbing wall in the church-I think it surprises most of the people coming from continental Europe.
But what I like about Dundee the most is the international environment, especially within the College of Life Sciences. We are a bunch of strangers gathered here from all around the world, and we really stick together, we are a family here, far away from home. I lived in Hungary and France before, but nowhere is as easy to find friends as it is in Dundee.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The purple lights in the trees on Perth Road.

The DCA!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee has an amazing live music scene. There is something to suit all tastes at a number of great venues. The Blues Bonanza is an event Dundonians can be proud of.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The amazing location of the city.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is a hub of knowledge, culture and innovation. People come from all over to participate in shaping the future of our city, country and general humanity.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Amanda Lowson at Dundee Reps community division. I remember her excitement on the day of her interview; 20 years on she is still a bundle of enthusiasm and excitement which never fails to inspire every adult and child she has contact with. Folk grow taller around her! Definitely one of Dundee's best kept secrets :)
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The ability to visit Broughty Ferry and do the 'Ferry 15', 15 pubs in the space of a 700 by 350 yard area.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is a city of great cultural richness, but the area in which I feel it excels is that of theatre. Both professionally, with the ensemble at Dundee Rep, and in the amateur field, Dundee presents an amazing variety of theatrical performances. Recent amateur productions include "Cats", "The Sound of Music" and "Whistle Down the Wind" with "Miss Saigon School Edition", "Parade" and "Spamalot" still to come this year. Absolutely fabulous darling! l
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is Scotland's sunniest city!! My favourite place in Dundee is Camperdown park which I remember going to regularly as a child and there was so much to do, whether it was exploring in the woods, feeding the ducks, playing in the playpark or visiting the zoo.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is a great size of city, not too big but but not too small, it's friendly with a fab cultural quarter. Spectacular views over the tay!!!. Great for sight seeing, shopping, a day out or a night out.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) One of the best waterfronts in Europe, which is about to be renewed and enhanced - Dundee is on the brink of reinventing itself - from rich industrial history to creative, scientific and cultural future! More than 800 years in the making... Exciting times that I'm proud to be a part of!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Great city filled with lots of wonderful things to do.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The people are so friendly. I get lots of foreign visitors at work and they all say this.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Love the abundance of independent shops and businesses...true entrepreneurial spirit in our city
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Cycling to work by a river (the Dighty burn) on a path beginning between a haulier's yard and the wind turbines of Michelin tyre plant, I pass herons, have seen kestrels and deer - and pass and occasionally stop at a mosaic decorated bench.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The no-nonsense Dundonians, who share creativity, great humour and pride in the town's development
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) i love Dundee!! born and bred here too! my personal feelings about Dundee involve the amazing natural talents of the Dundee people. having been involved in Community Drama for over 30 yrs,i have came across Dundee people who are dedicated and passionate about arts in the community, wether it be drama, dance music visual art etc. the talent is amazing, and has been for many years,my only criticism would be we(Dundee fowk) tend to be a bit shy at singing their own praises, therefore, some talented people slip through the net,we have to be supported in keeping community arts alive n kicking!hopefully the arrival of the V&A will open up community projects to the wonderful people of Dundee
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Moved from Dundee 15 years ago. However, i will always be a West end Lad. Magdalen Green, the Band Stand, the views across the Tay and McIntosh Patrick.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) How much I miss it - I never expected to feel that when I moved away, but there's a unique sense of warmth and welcoming about the Dundee
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) There are two paintings in The Pillars Bar depicting the sacking of Dundee during the17th century by General Monk's troops. Seeing these as a young man gave me a lifelong love of the history of the area and that is why I became a fine-art curator.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The view from the top of Glamis Road where it meets Dixon Avenue. This view of the Tay Estuary lookind towards Perth is picturesque like a scene from a Scottish Fairy tail. The Buzz of activity on the Perth Road on the evenings of the weekend is always welcoming. The Regeneration of the waterfront is truly amazing and looks to be progressing further for the future.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The helpful people who live here.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) No place can beat Dundee for green space and places to walk. Just begin to list the parks. Walking through cemetery and up to the observatory gives stunning views across Invergowrie bay and then to the North. Having lived in Glasgow for six years, I am continually reminded of what a great job the City does maintaining the parks and keeping the streets and open areas clean. Everyone I encourage to visit, loves it and can't believe they have never thought of coming to Dundee before.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Having spent my past 44 years living around the Tay estuary, I regularly re-discover the incredibly vibrant local music scene with which I first became familiar in 1969. The current crop of young musicians[I recently saw a 14 year old playing Peter green, Carlos Santana and Jimi Hendrix], supported and encouraged by the early 20 + year olds who had themselves been supported and are still supported by earlier generations. The Blues festival is rightly famous but you can go round many venues in Dundee weekly and hear music of the highest calibre.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The tranquility of Riverside on a Sunday morning, the richness of its history which still reflects throughout the city without hindering its amazing progress, the brilliant diversity of its people, and the never ceasing eruptions of creativity!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Modern architechture mixes with old, a centre of excellence on so many fronts, new shopping facilities, a vibrant nightlife, a varied spread of cultural entertainment-what more could anyone ask for. Already very popular with university students and a safe environment for all.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The fact that Dundee's law hill is actually a dormant volcano! And that it's got a secret tunnel through it! And that you can walk to the top for breathtaking views :-)
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) After living in another area I now realise how much I miss my home town. Proud to say I am a Dundonian!!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Whenever I travel back to Dundee I am always surprised at the beauty I see. Travelling over the water on the train I never fail to remember how lucky I am to be able to see our landscapes and treasures in architecture, history, creativity and community... That and a good pub!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I love the fact the even although Dundee is a city, it can feel so small. You will always find someone who knows someone else you know. Lived here all my life, apart from a short stay in Glasgow, but coming home either over the bridge or from any other direction, seeing a landmark and knowing I'm home is the best feeling in the world
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Old buildings
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee has so much creative talent!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee's setting is utterly stunning, its history is fascinating, its people warm, friendly and honest. From art galleries to community theatre, Dundee's cultural scene is growing and blossoming. What a fantastic choice Dundee would be for City of Culture 2017.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Arriving at Dundee the first time, I was surprised about the architecture. Look up, and you will find some amazing buildings. My favourite place is without doubt the McManus museum. What a wonderful place.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Rama Thai restaurant is wonderful as is Parlour Cafe and the city is vegetarian/vegan friendly compared to most, especially of this size.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is a delightful place to live and work. We have some beautiful sights to see; my favourite is the Howff cemetery in the city centre. No matter how busy the city is the Howff is always quiet and peaceful; it is quite surreal. Dundee Law is also a wonderful place to be. I will never tire of living in Dundee, and I am a very proud Dundonian.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is a vibrant city. A city we can (and all) love. A city with so much to see, full of heritage. A city with so many creative talents, that inspire so many people. Dundee is a homely city, a city we should be proud of.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The city's aspect, the river, its bridges, the weather, but most of all its friendly and talented people.....
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I like it that the city is always clean and the flower beds are tidy in the winter and blooming in the summer months.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The resilience of the city and the people - we keep geting knocked down and we still show a unity to keep going until we succeed.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The supportiveness, openness and creativity locally leaves me constantly surprised. A week never goes by without me talking to someone who is planning an event or initiative to strengthen Dundee's community through culture, design and art. Would love to see this bid as a way to highlight how much great work is going on in Dundee.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee University Archives are innovators in their attitude to accessibility and in addition to the richness of their local collections have surprising hidden gems like their collection of early photographs of the Beatles.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) A city where you can go for a walk in the hills in the morning, enjoy the beach in the afternoon, and then recharge yourself with a great meal and drink before catching some live music or a play in the evening. Everything is so accessible!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The Barnhill Rock Garden. My children's absolute favourite place to visit whatever the weather. Beautifully kept with lots of hidden paths and ponds. Peaceful, tranquil & magical - nature at its best.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) It's amazing how much the city is developing, The new waterfront with the V&A will be another outstanding addition to a fabulous city
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The beautiful people, the attitude & way of life.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) That there is so much in such a condensed place, and that so many people don't even notice it
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The Buzz around the city and the combined excitment about the waterfront no matter who people are.

:)
