PEOPLE AND GROWING

Support Dundee

The ever changing splendour of the Tay. Each time I cross the bridge the views are different. Sometimes the water is wild, rough and very dark. Other times it lives up to it’s reputation as ‘The Silvery Tay’, mirror-like, flat calm and very beautiful. It is always changing, always spectacular.

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Surprises:
Delicious food served in excellent restaurants
Uninterupted views from the top of the Law Hill
Never a dull moment with Theatres, Cinemas and skating
Discovering the beauty and history of The Discovery
Entertainment to suit all tastes in Nightclubs and Pubs
Enviable position on the banks of the stunning Silvery Tay

From a Glaswegian living happily in Dundee for over 30 years.

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Not just a town. Born and bred there and although I live many miles away now I'm always returning to my home town with its fabulous memories. Structural Dundee has changed dramatically over the years but its the people who make a place and Dundee certainly has a mixture of all sorts.
Great people, great city and great memories!

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) There's so much talent in one small city! DJCAD is the finest art school.

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Working in Dundee I love the community feel, co-operation and support for all kinds of creative endeavours across the city. It is a warm, friendly place with a great sense of history and we are all ajust bout to rediscover that amazing Tay....oh, and local bears, Comet and Star, at Camperdown have a broch purpose-designed by international artist,Mark Dion who also featured their paw prints in one of his own print editions. Grrrrrrrrrr.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Duncan of jordanstone college - just a wonderful place to learn
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The Howff - a graveyard in the centre of town where you can relax & chill.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) How many interesting and creative people come from Dundee... Not least of all my husband and actor Forbes KB !
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The Reading Rooms. Best venue in a 5-mile radius bringing great bands, DJs and nights to the city and supporting musicians, artists and everyone else. Catering for the underground in a funky old library that epitomises the redefinition of culture.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) It's not just about the Ferry or the west end : even smaller local areas have marvels like Fortes cafe, the Balmore Bar, Jessies kitchen and so many others. Dundee has wonderful architecture all over, not just in the currently affluent areas, and around every corner there are wonderful parks and green spaces. Dundee is beautiful if you look past the billboards and industrial sites....
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The view of the Tay, with the rail bridge and beyond. Every day it's different and every day it is beautiful!

It will comfort and uplift you.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The variety of culture to be found in such a small geographic area.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The diversity of cultures and people in the city. For a small city there are lots of different peoples here. This is reflected in the shops and the langauges you hear on the street, shows that Dundee people embrace equality and diversity
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Every time I come back to Dundee I don't feel at home until I have walked beside the river. It is a simple walk but the view is constantly changing. This magnificent bit of water can comfort, excite and rejuvenate. Whenever I show someone around Dundee I do the same walk down to the river. Time and again visitors comment not only on the view but how surprised they are at how everyone we pass smiles and says hello as we walk along. It is surprising how the common connection with the Tay connects its admirers and how, at other times when there is no one, there can be such quiet open space and wide horizons so close to a busy city.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) As an 'honorary' Dundonian who has proudly worked here for nearly 20 years I feel sometimes that to the outside world the whole city is a hidden secret. From the beauty of the setting to the wealth of internationally sigificant heritage to the vibrancy of the cultural scene - all are waiting to be discovered. And when you add in the warm and welcoming people with their irrerevant sense of humour - a winning combination!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I feel Dundee women have a deserved reputation for being strong independamt women as they have been since the days of the jute mills
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee's location at the mouth of the Tay offere unparalled natural beauty and light unlike any other.

The natural sense of pride the locals have in their city is well-deserved, it has incredible history from it's exporting days, fantastic educationional establishments today and a never ending culture of change in the lifestyles and culture of its people.

I lived there, first as a student and then working, for 17 years. I love the place. Sitll do. The best friends I have in this world still live there. There's a reason for that too.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Many organisers and conference delegates visiting the city have been wowed by the friendliness of the people and how much Dundee has to offer outwith key cities such as Edinburgh or Glasgow. Dundee is becoming a vibrant and exciting cultural destination and I am delighted to be a part of it!!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The amazing warm feeling I get when I see the Tay road bridge as I approach my hometown on the train.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The stories my gran told me of her time in the jute mills will never be forgotten. What terrible conditions to work under, for very little pay. The hard times they lived through made the women of Dundee strong but humorous, and a real sense of family. My gran's, and her parents, philosophy on family has been passed down the generations to my own children. Dundonian and proud.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The sense of pride Dundonians have in their city is incredible! The Dundonian sense of humour stands apart from that of other cities. Everyone is so welcoming and makes time to speak to others. That's what makes the difference.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee City of Discovery, what an apt name.
There is beauty and history at every turn. A magnificent waterfront that has all the history attached to ancient ships for example the discovery, Captain Scott of the Antarctic ship.
Beautiful art galleries and a wonderful museum.
Dundee is a thriving city on the move.

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The quirky city centre public art embedded in the street furniture and hidden in open view in buildings + Active cultural calendar and venues + People as chatty and open as Glaswegians + what's round the corner ...
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I moved away 14 years ago, just moved back to the area, what a difference. So multicultural and diverse with some great redevelopment of stale and uninspiring buildings making Dundee a city to be proud of again.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is so diverse. We are a City, surrounded by countryside 5 minutes drive away and sitting on the Firth of Tay, with a beach in Brought Ferry. We are also mad as this picture shows The New Year Dook!!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Finding contemporary arts - print studio is just amazing there so much talent there I can hardly pick just one thing to buy

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is the best city in Britain for seeing red squirrels.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The friendliness of the people,no matter their circumstances. The diverse types of music available to see and hear at many different venues across the city. The banter between the fans of the two major clubs in the city, always lively never taken to extremes! A city that I am so proud to call home.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The ability to go from modern sights to historical and cityscape to countryside and all in one walk and if your lucky a good icecream and seeing some dolphins at the end
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) It's where the heart is!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The most stunning waterfront in Europe. Looking towards the west at any time, absolutely incomparable experience.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The river Tay and all that's built along it! And a wonderful people.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The new McManus Galleries are excellent.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I'm surprised there is not more opportunity taken by the council to have cultural events throughout the year. It is good to see the city developiong though and with the V&A, the new City Square, etc., there is an opportunity to continue to develop a different side of the city. The City of Culture tag has done well for other cities it has attached itself to and would be a real boost for Dundee.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) What surprise's me about Dundee? How quickly/easily people become fond of and settle in Dundee (myself included). Many people from around the UK, and the world, come to Dundee and settle here. This is because of the welcoming attitudes of those who live here already, there's a real sense of community and belonging. This alongside the growing vibrancy of its creative industries makes Dundee an exciting place to be.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Culture is more than just art, theatre and buildings it is also about history and social morals and I believe Dundee is second to none on these areas.
1777 Dundee Joseph Knight a “Negro” slave won his freedom from his master Wedderburn when he successfully argued that “slavery was not recognised by Scots Law and runaway slaves (or 'perpetual servants') could be protected by the courts, if they wished to leave domestic services or were resisting attempts to return them to slavery in the colonies”. This was in effect abolishing slavery 100 years before the UK Parliament.
Dundee also has Mary Slessor who moved from Aberdeen to Dundee at the age of 11, Lily walker and many many more who stood up against tyranny and injustice to change the political and moral culture of our city and our country to make it more caring and equal for all.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The Tay, The Law, the bridges, the castles, the universities, the art college, the parks, the Nethergate, the V&A, the Unicorn, the Discovery, the Lamond schools, Castle Street, the waterfront, the Hilltown, the mills, the history, the views, the people, the cake and the pies.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dudhope Skatepark is a free, outdoor facility with a thriving community of skateboarders and bmxers. Continuing Dundee's strong skateboarding heritage which started back in the late 70's / early 80's, it's a great place to ride whether you've been skating for three days or three decades!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The quite and calm streets, diversity and cultural richness of Dundee are the most spectacular part of my memories; so much that I would love to come again and again. Discovery and Verdant Works take us back in history when courage was the only saviour of mankind. The mini gardens around the Dundee Law, all grown by citizens, is another experience I would like to recommend and replicate in Pakistan. And of course, best of all, the University of Dundee...
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I love Dundee, I've come back to Art College (DJCAD) as a pensioner to do a Masters in Fine Art and discovering a wonderful city, rich in history and a vibrant art scene. Warm and wonderful folk

It has a fabulous waterfront setting with glorious sunsets to inspire you - and a cracking cafe culture too!

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The creative community in Dundee is outstanding. There's so much talent crammed into this wee city. The creative community is close knit and supportive without being cliquey. It welcomes you in with open arms and encourages you to stay.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The airport is a treat - 5 minutes from check in to take off - and that's without a private jet.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The botanic gardens were a complete surprise - an oasis in the middle of the city and my 2.5 year old loved it too!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The Roseangle gallery, art exhibitions at the Botanic gardens, the paintings in the new gallery on South Tay street, the beautiful jewellery at the DCA shop...the list goes on.So much talent and so much creativity in his town.As an outsider who emigrated toDundee from India in 2001,I have watched the city reinvent itself culturally.I love Dundee and I hope to never leave.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The sheer number of individuals and groups who are involved in choirs, bands, music groups, pub gigs and sessions, art clubs, model railway, boat and aircraft making, musical theatre, local history and museums, lively community centres, Friends Of everything from the Unicorn and Barnhill Rock Garden to Balgay Hill and the Caird Hall Organ. The theatre turned to the people of Dundee who contributed over £60,000 in a few weeks and ultimately raised over £200,000 to complete the building and establish one of Scotland's finest cultural resources.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) My first time in Dundee was on late november last year, when Christmas lights turned ON for the first night and there were this fantastic atmosphere in downtown!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The wooden cobbles in Whitehall crescent.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I'm excited by the excitement change is bringing: Dundee's cultural contribution is yet to be defined. So many parts of a new way of binding a city together are in the froth along the Tay: knowledge, history, clean next-generation energy, sustainability, digital promise and information culture. Dundee is becoming something new, something beyond what each ingredient adds to the soup. It's where a diverse past is becoming a vibrant future.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) For such a small city Dundee punches well above it's weight when it comes to musical talent. Dundonains were involved in bands such as The Average White Band in the 1970's to to The View in the 2000's. I was also surprised to learn that the Blues Festival held in Dundee is the biggest free blues music festival in Europe.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The bridge club, housed in its own stunning premises on Perth Road, owned by the club since 1956. I have played in many bridge clubs throughout the UK, but never in such a spacious, comfortable building, with stunning views over the Tay estuary, it's own bar, catering facilities and friendly staff and members.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I recently worked with elderly pensioners in the city on a food project entitled 'Food as a Trigger for Memory'. The narratives of Dundee described by the people of Dundee was a very humbling experience. What was most striking for me was the sense of community that existed in Dundee. One woman explained that in her family on a Saturday if you worked you were given a Wallace's Bridie and if you didn't you were given a pie. Another pensioner could tell the time of day by the smells coming from Nicol's Bakery.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Every morning before work, as I walk my dog around the fields of the James Hutton Institute in Invergowrie, I am in awe of the beauty of the location of Dundee. The view over the Tay and Dundee City as the sun rises sets me up for the day ahead and reminds me how lucky I am to live in Dundee.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Great buildings - Gardyne's Land - original elements 1560, now preserved as a backpackers' hostel. St David's Rooms, - original elements early 1600's. 2 cathedrals - St Paul's and St Andrew's.

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I love Exchange street. It's full of little independent shops, cafes and restaurants that are way better than the usual chain stores.

And I love that our most famous statues are of cartoon characters!

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is often described as the world's biggest village and it's true. Everyone knows nearly everyone and if you don't, the old adage rings true that strangers are friends we've yet to make! I no longer live in Dundee but I miss the place heaps - unlike most people I know who have left their home towns & don't look back. Dundee's community education is revered throughout Scotland and outside of Dundee acknowledge them as leaders at the forefront of this sector. And it's not just education Dundee are leading the way in but science, medicine & also the gaming industry, with even the infamous Banksy paying homage to Lemmings, an icon of an era, invented in Dundee... The city really is one of many discoveries :-)
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I like the penguins in the centre of town and by the Discovery!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is an amazing city to be part of. It blends together the traditions and culture of the past, with its modern approaches to education, arts, commerce and industry of today, and with our aspirations for the future. Where is there a city in the UK which has gone through so many transformations yet is still striving to reinvent itself again through the Dundee Waterfront Project? I can't wait to see it finished! Dundee has taken a leap of faith to secure its future as one of the UK's most exciting cities to live in.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee has developed a wow factor!

The city also has wonderful architecture that shows the rich and varied history of Dundee.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I love the increasing amount of arts within the city! The home of a growing dance scene comparable with international cities. Duncan and Jordanstone, DCA, McManus, V&A, WASPS... need I say more?!

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is a friendly city, and everything is easy to reach, as it is a small city. the Kingsway is a lovely road with all the flowers and plants. Dundee also has a lot of open park areas, and lots of trees.

A Dolphin gambols wi yachts in strong tidal bay, All can be seen fae tap o' the Law,
A jewel of a City or just affy Braw? (Paw!)

Dundee is oor city o' which we are proud,
So c'mon all you Taysiders and say it out loud.
We live here and work here and play and explore
It's simply our hame which we all adore!

3 Js a cliche but history dear,
That Oor Toon's a changin' is perfectly clear.
A chance for yet another recovery,
One City mebbe - but infinite Discovery!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I studied Fine Art at DJCA and my experience there, the aspiration and belief it had, and that living in the city provided, all instilled aspiration in me beyond measure. The dynamics of being a student in the city was way beyond the comparative scale of the city, the environment was rich in enquiry and expertise, pride in the city was palpable and the attitude positive and open towards everyone. I miss the obvious 'cultural highlights' but I miss the warmth of the people and old Dens Rd Market.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The friendly people of Dundee never let you down, always something makes you smile about the characters
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Each time I come back to Dundee I love to walk down by the river near Broughty Castle. It always brings back great memories of the harbour swim training and the cross-Tay swims that I participated in many years ago and that still continue today. :)

:)
