The city is full of ‘characters’, people who are distinctly Dundonian, but speak to the common strands of humanity everywhere. Likewise, Dundee is a city that has encapsulated so much of the world in its time. What better place to celebrate culture?

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Being a past student of UoD, I can honestly say I would have rather gone nowhere else. The best student union in the UK and a strong student culture that is really celebrated by the entire city. Dundee is a city with the best parts of a busy city and a friendly town, the community really gets together and is united through love of their hometown.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> One of the best places to go and have your lunch in the city centre in summer time is actually... cemetery. Howff Burial Ground. It's just across the street from the post office on Meadowside. It's surprisingly quiet and calm. You got to try it.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> I'm always struck by how good it feels to see so much going on all around me. Just last night I was walking up the Queen's steps from the Greenmarket to the Perth Road amongst people just leaving Dundee Science Centre, excitedly discussing the Cafe Science talk they had just seen. They all soon merged with people gathered outside the DCA who were themselves indistinguishable from the theatre goers all heading towards the Rep to begin their evening's entertainment. Great to see.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The most vital about the town is the local people, that are the most wonderful and calm staying people Ive ever seen in my life. Just imagine how much things could be done in a small place but with such variety of people - thousands of students all over the world have an opportunity to do whatever they want and they do so, local people is so reach by their culture and education always ready to help. The Dundee Top is the most beautiful place just cause of the view from it to the city, two bridges and the sea.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Many things to see and do in Dundee but for me nothing beats a Sunday afternoon stroll in Camperdown park with my family and the dog.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> I love Dundee as it's my centre and gateway to magical Munros, beautiful white beaches, and scottish villiages, towns and cities to explore. The ever evolving face of Dundee and the new exciting opportunities on our horizons is truly making Dundee one of the great capitals on Scotland!
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The creative resilience of the people. And how much I still like a peh.

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Im Proud Dundonian. I Love how GTA was created in Dundee! and look out for the next top selling title to come from our city :)
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The music. There's a surprising variety. Open mic nights with some talented acoustic musicians, jazz and swing on the HMS unicorn, well known names playing gigs at the dog house or fat sam's and everything in-between. Whether you want a chilled out night, fancy some dancing or want to see your favourite band Dundee has it all.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> the amazing views from Ninewells Hospital - got to be the best views of any hospital in Scotland
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Moving from York to Dundee for university I was surprised at the city's natural beauty! everywhere you go there is a diverse set of buildings all telling the history of the city, how it has grown and been developed. From student bars and clubs, art spaces and good food, Dundee represents the world in a city.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The creativity and talent within the city's games industry always impresses me.

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The ancient history, never realised it has been a settlement for thousands of years! The Jacobite rising started on the Law, how amazing! love the city events for Christmas etc.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> It's actually not bad. No, really it's great. I've been here for 8 years and think it's an incredibly vibrant wee place.

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Having studied at the University of Dundee for almost three years now, the way in which the university runs itself in relation to the city is incredible. I have really enjoyed the uni bringing in all aspects of Dundee to uni campus. It makes me feel like I not only belong at uni but I belong in Dundee itself.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> There is so much in the city that encourages people of all ages to get creative in some way. We have great things available for 'budding artists'. My 3 year old loves the DCA activity room and the workshops at the creative learning space at the McManus. Plus they are all free! The award of City of Culture would inspire our future generations.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, as part of the University of Dundee, is ranked among the top art colleges in the UK for research, and led the country in student satisfaction surveys. As a testament to the quality of Education provided at DJCAD, its students have won more awards at the London New Designers exhibition than students from any other institution in the UK for two consecutive years.

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> It's that Dundee isn't better known for the wonderful place that it is. Outsiders dwell on the negatives about the city but the reality is that that we are a small city with a thriving creative and artistic scene coupled with a surprising smattering of the high tech. And I love that our most famous statues are of cartoon characters!

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The thrill of crossing the Tay never diminishes. Neither does the heart rate when climbing to the top of the Law to look out over a city full of little gems - including the Holy Trinity of a Perfect Night Out: DCA, the Phoenix and the Istanbul.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> You turn corner's here and find surprise's. Each street contains a hero, an ambassador. An individual who goes that extra mile every day, helping neighbours and strangers alike, making the city a little brighter each day.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The computer games culture in Dundee is excellent; it's easy to meet industry folks for a pint, particularly (Bert) Wednesdays and I enjoy fighting game action with Giant Attack Dundee as well, also in the pub.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The view from the top of Dundee Law must be one of the best city panoramas in Britain.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Dundee has the most beautiful setting of any city I know. It is built on hills which allow amazing views of the Tay, sometimes from places you don't expect. The view driving down West Park Road never ceases to take my breath away. This, coupled with amazing green spaces and parks, makes it the perfect place to live...and walk, and run.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> I studied Fine Art at DJCA and my experience there, the aspiration and belief it had, and that living in the city provided, all instilled aspiration in me beyond measure. The dynamics of being a student in the city was way beyond the comparative scale of the city, the environment was rich in enquiry and expertise, pride in the city was palpable and the attitude positive and open towards everyone. I miss the obvious 'cultural highlights' but I miss the warmth of the people and old Dens Rd Market.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The cultural quarter.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The brilliant variety of live theatre, music, venues, quaint independent shops, cafes, restaurants....the list is endless. A university town, vibrant and colourful that cares about itself.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> After living in Dundee for over 30years the river continues to delight me. You can see it at the same time every day and it is never the same, weather , tide, time of year and light. It is so much an integral part of the city yet sets the city off. To the landward side of Dundee there are fantastic walks in the Sidlaws. Living in Dundee gives you the advantages of a city yet within 30 minutes drive you are in lovely countryside. An incredible combination.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The people are so friendly. I get lots of foreign visitors at work and they all say this.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Sunbathing on magdalen green when the sun is shining!
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The main surprise to an outsider is the vibrancy and richness of the cultural life, which reflects the enthusiasm of the people who live and work in Dundee. They have a real pride in the history and achievements of the city; these attitudes are found right across the spectrum of the population.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> It's such a big small place. A magicalwarm place that is such a wonderfully well kept secret. Dundee knows its roots, it isn't afraid to be proud of them, but it won't pretend to be something that it isn't. It is quintessentially Scottish.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Dundee Half Marathon - friendly and a great atmosphere
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> I love the variety, the accent and the friendliness of Dundee I was born in Dundee and for 55 years kept quiet about my birthplace now I want to shout it out I AM PROUD TO BE DUNDONIAN!
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The historical buildings, the Scottish culture, the use of traditional teaching aids in the University, the lovely River Tay, and when I was there, a new casino opened!
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> All the people are so friendly and happy to help! It really makes someone's day when someone smiles at you, it puts a spring in your step and that is what Dundee has done for me - given me the spring in my step and through the support of the many great people around me that I have gone on to persue my dreams, because they helped me feel like I CAN!
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> I'm delighted that the University has introduced and encourages lots of different ethnic groups to come and live in the city. It opens up lots of different opportunities for the natives of Dundee, some of whom have never travelled outwith the city or abroad.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The ever changing splendour of the Tay. Each time I cross the bridge the views are different. Sometimes the water is wild, rough and very dark. Other times it lives up to it's reputation as 'The Silvery Tay', mirror-like, flat calm and very beautiful. It is always changing, always spectacular.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The famous Nine Trades of Dundee --nine groups keeping alive 500 years of tradition and culture through the ancient guilds which made Dundee thrive --from medieval times. A great legacy.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> A beautiful city in a beautiful location with a great tradition of industry, education and the arts. My favourite location is Riverside Drive, the walk between the two bridges is always stunning regardless of the weather
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> We have such a vast amount of interesting places and things to do. My great grandchildren are here for Easter so we intend doing The Rock Garden/Broughty Ferry Castle/Sensation Centre/DCA/Verdant Works etc etc. and their excitement is hard to contain. Also as a family we think Dundee has one of the best music scenes going on as well.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Magdalen Green on a summer Sunday, with a band playing in the band stand and a picnic with the family
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The fact you can turn a corner and find an amazing piece of street art, or a medieval building or just meet an interesting character, who's always friendly and willing to share
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Not sure about a hidden secret, the secret seems to be the combination of contrasts that enrich each (besides the emerging strengths of "real" culture): The Tay, different from all heights and angles (foregrounds of beautiful parks (Balgay Hill, Magdalen Green) or industrial heritage or multis or Meggie's Centre); Buildings old and new of different uses (the Mecca Bingo beside the church, the mosque among the old jute mills, the new university buildings beside old houses, the medieval arches under the pub back exit); And then the "real" culture as it spreads throughout the city: Scottish Dance Theatre and Dundee Schools Musical Theatre, Community Theatre in the Rep, small scale viewings in the DCA and Hannah Mclure Centre, school competitions (art and music). <b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Dundee is a city of many surprises, including our museums, our landscape, and our hidden gems like the howff graveyard. A medieval graveyard in beautiful condition. Everyone here is incredibly friendly, and we merge the past and the future, only in Dundee do you find a university leading the way in technology and gaming, and one of the oldest universities in Scotland!

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> we have the closest 2 football teams in the world. and dundee united are the only team in europe to have beaten barcelona everytime that we have played them in europe

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> A small city where everything is happening! Dundee got strong roots, but also keep an eye on the future! Friendly people everywhere, nice wee places to eat! (I really love Lily and Stone caffe!) The waterfront is beautiful!
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The friendliness of the locals has got to be listed as one of Dundee's best assets. Anytime I come home from Australia the welcome mat is rolled out. Good luck with your bid!

Having read, 'The Law Killers' by Alexander McGregor I discovered how interesting the history of the city really is. With a Jack The Ripper suspect living here too other fascinating murders and crimes being committed. Some unsolved cases and many strange cases add to the richness and interest of the city.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> My favourite things about Dundee are the people and the accent! Friendly folk and a fab dialect! I'll hae fower pehs, twa sassidge rolls, a plen bridie and an ingin ane an a!
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The rich diversity of the city's historical legacy, which is reflected in its social history, as well as the many unseen surprises on the buildings and little pockets of interesting nooks and crannies tucked away, waiting to be explored.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Perth road has the equivalent of my own local butchers and veg shop, where else do you get your own local village center within a big city?!
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> It's proximity to the beach at Broughty Ferry and the wildness of the Angus Glens (and mountains!) The friendliness of the people and the number of different things available to do with my children on rainy days. Even though I have never lived there, (my extended family did and still does) every time I visit it feels like a homecoming!

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> I am a visually impaired musician born in Dundee. It is never short of amazing venus, and it has plenty of opportunities to hear some some amazing bands.

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Dundee is a city where the river Tay meets the North Sea. This huge tidal river with its spectacular views to Fife has the largest volume of water of any river in the UK. Dundee also housed the residents of two of the biggest psychiatric (Liff) Hospital and learning disability (Strathmartine) hospital in the East coast of Scotland. Many ex- hospital residents choose to remain in Dundee and have been absorbed into community life. No easy feat in a town of 140,000 population but were accepted with Dundonian’s usual kindness and down to earth attitude.

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Dundee is a university city. It is multicultural, it is international. It has the sea, amazing landscape, nice amenities and a proud history. Above all, despite hard economic times, its people are simply wonderful.

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Dundee West is a cultural festival led by the community. It has developed from a standing start into an extremely successful and community engaging festival in a very short time through the dedication of members of the community.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> I love my city, even created my own blog dedicated to it, so my friends and relatives can find out more about this place.

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> As a visiting distance learning student, I thought the Dundee Backpackers Hostel was a hidden gem of the city's heritage. It is an unusual converted 16th-19th century building with layers of character and some interesting preserved objects on display. The city's rich culture is also represented by a vibrant and diverse art scene which adds to the enjoyment of being there.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The level of excellence both universities have fostered in a diverse range of areas combined with the foresight to create an environment that supports continued betterment of the city and those that live in it is a glorious virtuous cycle.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> One of the most amazing places in the city, though some may think it slightly morbid, is the Howff Cemetery located just to the north of the overgate shopping centre. This small plot of land encapsulates the history of the city through it's people. The headstones, though old and some damaged include the names of ship's captains, sugar merchants, bakers and weavers. Standing next to the old DC Thompson buildings, it is the one place in modern Dundee where you can truly appreciate everything that the city was and is. From jam, jute and journalism to the forefront of scientific research and discovery. This city is a truly amazing place, you only need to look!

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The Blues Bonanza an annual weekend event in mid summer! The world's biggest free blues festival attracting musicians and fans from all over the globe. Many bars and clubs across the city host a variety of local, national and international acts. They are welcomed by a friendly and fun-loving population. The West Fest is another festival, a week long one with a more local and artsy feel to it, covering all artistic genres!
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Dundee's children are it's hidden secret ! It's way forward into 2017 and beyond being proud of their city and all it holds for everyone .

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Best thing about Dundee is the people. It's diverse, constantly changing and welcoming population are what made me want to move to Dundee and why it still feels like home every time I make a trip back
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> A very strong artist-led community, with events at Tin Roof, Generator and WASPS studios.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The amazing work our volunteer organisations do with the youth of today – be it Girls Brigade, Boys Brigade, Brownies, Guides or Scouts and not forgetting the many sports teams, community centres, dance or music classes that Dundee volunteers support.  The many volunteers who help the sick, elderly, vulnerable, meals on wheels, support charity shops, fundraising events, support at courts and hospitals and many other tasks not listed.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> There is so much I miss about Dundee - I live near Aberdeen now and there is no comparison. The Rep, Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre, vibrant degree shows at Vision, walking thorough the City and feeling the energy and of course the music
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> dundee surprises me because no matter what i find out about our great city there is always more to find out,dundee has a great past, in fact it has a fantastic past, the people are so great here,sure we have our share of the riff raff, but so does other cities,
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> I'm a Dundonian who has been living away for the past 10 years. Next year I am coming home and I couldn't be more excited! During my recent visits I have seen remarkable improvements in Dundee but know this is only the start! Dundonians are the warmest people I have come across, this together with the impressive developments in the City makes Dundee the place to be!
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> This is a city where what you do feels noticed and appreciated. Dundee has an encouraging and supportive atmosphere for creative ventures and isn't afraid to be itself! Places like Creative Dundee, Tin Roof, Hot Chocolate Trust, The Rusty Hip Collective, Generator Projects, Flyboy Productions and Art Angel are great examples of people setting up their own thing and connecting with our community together. So happy to live here!!
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Dundee is one of the few places in the world where an adventure can be found behind every corner. I often describe Dundee as the worlds biggest village- everyone seems to know everyone. Yet, on the other hand, Dundee offers enough experiences to feel like the world is on your doorstep through cuisine, art, culture, music and Education.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Great mix of people. Good cultural mix. Set on the silvery tay. Climb the Law - see for miles.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The city of Dundee blends the past with the present. Its steeped in history has many iconic places and landmarks from east to west. One of the advantages is that even being a city the countryside is near by with lovely villages and towns surrounding it.The scenery for most parts is eyecatchíng has historical ships castles and many more appealing things for the visitors to the City
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Quite a few things.....Cycling to work and seeing seals on the sandbanks of the Tay! The Howff as a picnic spot and new independent coffee shops. The Cheesery....ok, that's all food related....The view of the river at night with the twinkly lights across the Tay.. Straightforwardness and modesty of the people. Creativity and accessibility. The wonderful research going on and the impact and distinctiveness of our universities.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> There"s a willingness to make things happen; people listen, consider and act and it feels as if the door is open. It's a city which aspires and inspires.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Rich industrial history with women working in the mills and their male folk staying at home boiling kettles and looking after the bairns

<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> strolling through parts of Dundee it can be sometimes uncertain whether we are beholding the longings of yesteryear or the imaginings of today. Dundee's old mills are fascinating reminders of its industrial history, intriguing features in the city fabric. Dundee feels like a contrast between a little scottish town and a truly cosmopolitan vibe. Facilities like those of the Print Studio at the DCA draw artists &amp; creative people from all over the country.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Schools orchestra concerts, nycos choir and youth musicals performed to very high standards...
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Dundee: Is a big family... Is the place Dundonians don't want to leave... Has it's own language of circles and backies... Is familiar...
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Dundee is about to have its first historical anthology of poetry - 'Whaleback City' (from Dundee University Press). The broad sweep of Dundee's history, people and gegraphy has been represented in poetry since the 16th century, and this book will chronicle all of it through the words of Sir Walter Scott, Wiliam McGonagall, Joseph Lee, Don Paterson, Douglas Dunn, W N Herbert and many others.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Dundee has always had unique character, attitude and humour. The setting is undeniably beautiful and the creative, academic and scientific talent unquestionable. However, it's the singular spirit, which has carried the people through some dark times, that will make the next phase in the city's life so amazingly, beautifully, quintessentially Dundonian. What does that mean? It means that it will be carried out with real conviction and no bull****. We have been viewed as underdogs for so long that once we are given the platform to shine, we won't take it for granted. And we have the best accent ever.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> It's not a lack of things to say that's kept me from posting here, but the opposite. For such a small place there's so much cultural cache, from a vibrant and multifarious music scene to a fantastic art college, brilliant artist-run spaces and obviously the excellent resource that is Dundee Contemporary Arts. Above all though, within &amp; without the cultural hubs of Dundee it is the genuine sense of community that makes the place so special.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The hidden gems that are not often publicised. Duncan Of Jordanstone produces so much artistic talent not often known about. Landscape is beautiful and there are many open spaces. Shopping Culture and Entertainment is vibrant in this city.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Dundee has an amazing creative scene, Photographers (like us!) Film Makers, Jewellery, Fashion, Games Design. Vibrant, Cutting Edge and Diverse
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> It's Dundee's long standing culture of ideas which prompts an unpretentious and stimulating art scene that continues to produce and be produced by imaginative and clear thinking individuals from all walks of life - a situation I've found to be inspiring and supportive since moving here in the 1990s and have seen gaining pace ever since.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> The range of cultural activities and sites available in and around the city. From fantastic architecture (buildings and bridges) to a whole range of galleries and parks, to the theatres, cinemas, concert halls, football stadia, etc. Not to mention the mighty Tay and Macgonagall.
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> In some of the industrial port areas you will just sit for hours on, enjoying the old industrial, maybe a bit rotty looking sites with having the view on the see. As a student, I love this place for just relaxing and writing with the industrial 'landscape' aside. It just gives me goosebumps every time, thinking back to when this was one of the ports to the world. Strange, but stunning feeling!
<b>Q) What surprises you about the city?</b><br><hr><b>A)</b> Dundee is a fabulous city in the most stunning location in Europe. That's no surprise to those of us who have grown up here and still live here.
