Dundee is geographically the sunniest city in Scotland and it's true - whenever I visit Dundee to visit family & friends (monthly) the sun is always shining! I got married in Dundee & my husband's family from England were bowled over by how friendly people were, everywhere they went. And how clean and pretty the town is. Makes me feel so proud, like most Dundonians are of our city and what we've achieved.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I moved here for University in the summer, the friendliness of the locals and the incredible architecture has surprised me the most. Dundee boasts the most incredible scenery of any city in the UK.

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) There was a bookshop once, new to Dundee, but boy was that place embraced. Attracted a really varied cross section of the region & everybody got involved. It was only as it was closing that it really hit home how much it had become part of the cultural fabric of the city - in reality it was only bricks & mortar, it was the PEOPLE who made it such a great hub.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The Walk along the front is fantastic!

There is many more current examples of community theatre in Dundee, the production of "This Town" at the Verdant works being a another good example.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Being a student at DJCAD the city offers so much in the range of influence and inspiration, that's why I love it here, there's so much to offer for students at the uni. Shame the V&A can't come quicker.

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The ideal nature of the city, situated facing the Tay,much of what Is needed Is but a quick bus, taxi or car journey away, going to see Dundee play on the Saturday, the rare event of the Dundee Derby hopefully soon to return, fireworks at Lochee Park, the meeting with mates at Boots, shopping at Officers Club, buying the Evening Telegraph or Courier, picking up the annual fixture list provided by the Tele, the beauty of the West End,in particular Magdalen Green, the familiar sound of the water at Broughty Ferry, the famed ice cream shop, turning on of the Christmas lights,Desperate Dan and the dragon In town, the views from the Law.

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I'm constantly surprised by the huge amount of history in such a compact area, and the almost hidden current developments in area like art & technology.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The universities and museums! Two universities mean that there are fantastic opportunities to acquire knowledge, both formally and informally (through diversity and cultural enrichment) and the newly refurbished McManus galleries offer an insight on all aspects of life in Dundee.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee has a distinctive culture and tradition and is big enough to have at least one of everything, that makes a city worth living in and visiting - and of course there is more to come. It also a view from the top of the Law that takes your breath away - while also looking like a child's picture book of a city. Where else can you watch - all at the same time - a train crossing a bridge, a plane about to land, ships leaving harbour, and a cityscape set in the most beautiful natural surroundings.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The D'Arcy Thompson collection is amazing and something for Dundee to celebrate. I think more attention should be placed on the collection and the art works it inspires. What a great attraction.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) All the cheeky birds.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is musically rich, at any time you can find real talent performing in the city's bars. The history of Dundee's music along with the facilities available to musicians make it a great place to be immersed in music!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) What surprises me is the lack of publicity and awareness of the old curved wynds between high street and harbour. Much of the shape of the city remains from medieval times yet the old masonry is unloved and needs to be made more of.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Nothing surprises me...thrilled to find Dundee is finally getting the recognition it deserves. It's always been Glasgow or Edinburgh, then later Aberdeen, to get any accolades going, Am I biased? Of course a little bit, just a little, but if we are/were really familiar with Dundee's history being a city of culture isn't a revelation.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The people of Dundee have had a lot to put up with regarding employment issues among other things but despite this, the City appears to be flourishing. I love the idea of the V and A coming to Dundee. We have a Frank Geary building!!!! That's VERY special.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) In 1901 the RRS Discovery was launched from Dundee and took Captain Scott on an epic joiurney of discovery to Antarctica. What I find exciting about Dundee is that it is now the city itself that is on a journey of discovery with the people of Dundee as the crew.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I loved it when I was a new student in 1986 when I came to Dundee via the Tay Bridge. In those days it had the toll booth and on my nervous arrival in Dundee with mum and dad to begin my Art School journey there seemed to be a huge , beautiful lemon tree at the bridge. On closer inspection this turned out to be hundreds of empty jiff lemon squeezy bottles tied on to the tree by the men working in the booths. It made us all smile with delight and I have remembered it ever since.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) What doesn't surprise me about Dundee? As an 'incomer' 19 years ago what struck me then and now is the never ending enthusiasm of the people, the fantastic natural surroundings, the long term vision for the place and its proximity to nature, wild places and other cities. The creative talent in the City is amazing from musicians, film makers, dancers, games developers, artists, actors, theatre groups..... I could go on.

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee is a place of wonderful collaborations. It's a rare City where events are discussed and shared between venues. The McManus, The Rep, Sensation, the University, The DCA... and soon the V&A might spearhead events in the city but there are so many other venues that are engaging locals and visitors. There is always something going on!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) As an 'honorary' Dundonian who has proudly worked here for nearly 20 years I feel sometimes that to the outside world the whole city is a hidden secret. And when you add in the warm and welcoming people with their irrerevant sense of humour - a winning combination!

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee has without doubt the most heartbreakingly beautiful sunrise/sunset landscapes in the UK and perhaps in any city anywhere. That is reason enough for anyone to visit it but it also a city of gritty, entertaining and sometimes endearing character. It has a unique relationship between a very industrial and scottish local population and a very new and international university. The University also boasts an impressive art school populated by quirky and impulsive people who help to make the city fascinating

There is always something exciting happening in Dundee's bars and galleries. With the help of the DCA, DoJ and other well-meaning parties such as local music promoters; musicians, film-makers, artists and designers will always find a home for their terrific talent somewhere in the city.

When I heard we were in the running for City of Culture, my first thought was "Yes, why not?" we have had so much to offer over the years and so much still to offer; art, music, scenery, setting, "couthieness". We deserve the chance to show the rest of the world just how great we are!

The dance, drama and live music staged in different locations around the former jute works was a much-enjoyed sell-out.

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) When I first was considering studying art at Dundee I took a train journey up for the open day. The conductor was horrible refused to accept my card and was very unhelpful when I asked what I could do as I had no money on me. A stranger sitting next to me offered to pay my fare and I could repay her when we got off at Dundee. Once we were in Dundee and I had given the money back she turned out to be an art student and took me to the art college! Dundee's friendliness inspires me!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) There's so much to offer at every time of the year and for every age, having only been in Dundee since 2005 I can't ever imagine leaving.

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The heart of the city to me is the university of Dundee and the Duncan of Jordanstone. Even before I was a student I was impressed by how it was a self-contained area and I enjoyed the atmosphere and diversity of life all along the Perth Road. In the summertime there are always new faces and this breathes new life into the city. It's a creative, buzzing place.

It always makes me feel proud of the city and its people.
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) Dundee aint no cookie cutter moulded city, and thank goodness for that. It is a force to be reckoned with in its continuous drive to reinvent itself time and again throughout its history, most recently in the birth of the waterfront project and the blossoming of the city's visual and performing arts scene. It is great to see that Dundee never tires of 'discovering' new talents within itself, and long may that last.

Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) I moved back to Dundee three years ago after spending 10 years away and am finally appreciating how artistically, culturally and musically vibrant the city is. In a relatively small city local talent is on display everywhere- the DCA, The Rep, McManus Galleries, Clarks, The Art Bar, Dukes Corner, Duncan of Jordanstone, Westfest, Literary Dundee, the Gardyne Theatre, etc, etc.The buzz around the V&A is amazing in the city, and makes me proud to be Dundonian!!
Q) What surprises you about the city?

A) The scale and variety of world class activity that takes place in Dundee from cutting edge science to advanced digital media activity, from highbrow theatre and arts to community involvement in cultural activity.
